Woolly Mammoths
Woolly mammoths (Mammuthus primigenius) were majestic, shaggy-coated relatives of modern elephants that roamed the cold steppe tundras of North America, Europe, and Asia during the Pleistocene epoch. Adapted for extreme glacial climates, they were equipped with thick layers of subcutaneous fat, long curved tusks for shoveling through deep snow, and a dense, insulating coat of dark brown fur with an underwool layer. Despite enduring harsh Ice Age conditions and coexisting with early human hunters, their populations steadily declined due to rapid post-glacial warming and habitat loss, ultimately leading to their extinction around 4,000 years ago on remote Arctic refuges like Wrangel Island.
