Apholidotus ossna is a rare primitive fish from the late Mississippian Bear Gulch Limestone of Montana, known from an exceptionally preserved shallow-marine deposit that captured a highly diverse Carboniferous ecosystem. It was a small, generalized terrasiid fish with an early, unspecialized body plan compared with many later ray-finned fishes, and it lived alongside other unusual marine animals in the oxygen-poor basin environment that helped preserve delicate fossils in remarkable detail. Because it is so obscure and known from limited material, its exact appearance is not as fully reconstructed as better-known fossil fishes, but it is generally understood as part of the small-bodied, bottom-water fish community that inhabited Bear Gulch.
 
Bear Gulch Limestone
The Bear Gulch Limestone is a Late Mississippian limestone lens in central Montana, about 324 million years old, famous as a **lagerstätte** because it preserves marine life in exceptional detail. It formed in a shallow tropical bay in the Central Montana Trough and consists of fine-grained, laminated carbonate sediments deposited in short pulses, likely driven by seasonal storms and density flows that rapidly buried organisms in low-oxygen mud. As a result, it preserves a diverse Carboniferous ecosystem with fishes, invertebrates, algae, and even soft-tissue details such as gut contents and delicate body outlines, making it one of the most important fossil sites for studying Paleozoic marine life.
