Three species are recognized, ranging from the tiny\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e P. minor\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, about house‑cat sized, to the larger \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eP. probus\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, which approached living peccaries in body size and is known from more complete cranial and dental material.
